How to Identify a Boykin Spaniel

A resource for shelter staff and veterinarians

A Cocker Spaniel/Irish Setter mix. A dark-brown miniature Poodle. A Springer Spaniel/Chesapeake Bay retriever mix. A chocolate lab/cocker mix… all of these designations have befallen Boykin Spaniels. Some have been adopted out of shelters as mixed breed dogs, some haven't been as fortunate. If only they were identified properly, things may have been different. Community animal shelter staff and volunteers make every effort to ID a dog when it comes through their door, and they go to great lengths to find that dog a new family. But sometimes there's no time or resources – that's where the breed rescue groups can help.

Boykin Spaniel Rescue is dedicated to rehoming unwanted or neglected Boykin Spaniels. Information about our organization may be found online at:
www.geocities.com/boykinrescue, or by searching Yahoo! for Boykin Spaniel.

But how to you know you have a Boykin in your midst? Here are a few clues to look for:

1. Boykins are brown. The shade can vary from a dark chocolate color to a reddish-liver hue. If the dog has been outdoors, it could have amber to golden "highlights" on the ears, feathering, and head. There can also be a white patch on the chest.

2.

Boykins come in three coat types, wavy, curly, and flat.

A wavy-coated Boykin looks like this.
A curly-coated Boykin looks like this.
A flat-coated Boykin looks like this.

For additional information on boykin appearences please see the Boykin Spaniel Breed Standard, the main area that they will be outisde the standard is size. We have seen pure breed Boykin Spaniels that weight as little as 20 lbs. and as much as 55 lbs.
